Two of MedTug Norway’s tugboats, Stadt Florø and Stadt Kinn, have recently installed high-speed internet via Starlink. This marks a technological leap for the crew who spend long days and nights at sea.

Employees at MedTug Norway work both near and far during their rotations at sea. For many, being away from family and friends can be a challenging experience. We want to make it easier for our crew to stay in touch with their loved ones, even when they are physically far away. That’s why we’ve installed high-speed internet from Starlink on board two of our vessels.

What is Starlink?

Starlink is a satellite-based broadband service provided by SpaceX. The service offers stable and fast internet access even at sea. For the crew, this means not only being able to stay in touch with family, reading news, and streaming entertainment, but also improved access to digital platforms, up-to-date weather data, and safety information.

“It’s like going from dial-up to fiber,” says Joakhim Osland, Captain on Stadt Florø. “Now we can have video calls with friends and family back home without the picture freezing.”

Improved well-being and safety

For crew members who work in shifts and spend long periods away, maintaining contact with the outside world is essential. Starlink makes it easier for the crew to stay connected with family and friends back home.

Part of a larger initiative

The installation is part of a broader initiative to modernize the vessels and improve the working conditions for the crew. With increasing digital collaboration and reporting requirements, reliable internet access is no longer a luxury – it’s a necessity.

For Captain Osland, this is a sign that the seafaring profession is entering the digital age without losing its soul. «We’ve always been skilled at towing operations. Now we’ve mastered Wi-Fi too», he says with a laugh.
